The Key To A High Converting eCommerce Home Page

Transcript

Hey, what’s up? A quick video, I’m going to show you the key to a high converting homepage. So, if you’re an eCommerce owner, this is just going to be a pretty cool video for you because this week I’ve had a couple of new clients join my eCommerce program.

And one of the very first things we do is we go and analyze and make sure that their store and their homepage is optimized for growth. Because if you’re only turning traffic to your store, even if you’re sending traffic to a product page, it’s really, really important that the homepage is optimized for growth because 80% of your traffic is going to go to your homepage, anyway.

So I’m going to show you in a second, what makes a high converting homepage because I’ve seen a lot of eCommerce stores. I do a lot of audits and I look at a lot of eCommerce stores and they make the same mistakes over and over again.

Now the key to a high converting homepage is that it has to very clearly articulate to the visitor, exactly what actions that they need to be taking in order to maximize revenue for you, right? So as soon as they land on your homepage, they’ve got about three seconds, okay? Three seconds to get the following information, what have you got for me? And how do I get it? And what you have for them and how they get it should be directing the individual or the visitor to the place on your site or to the products on your site, that are going to give you the most amount of revenue.

So they land on your site. They need to look at your site and in three seconds figure out, well, what do you have for me? And how do I get it? Now, I’m going to show you some stores that are doing this badly. And then I’m going to show you one store that’s doing this really, really well because once you get this right, you’re going to see your conversion rates on your eCommerce site go up quite dramatically.

So, let’s have a look at this here, okay? Now, this is a typical Shopify theme. I love Shopify, I think they’re great. I’m a big, big, big singer of their praises. I sing about Shopify from the rooftops, but their stock themes sometimes, or even the themes that are built by developers, they look good, but they’re not necessarily built for conversions.

And this particular theme here is very typical to a lot of themes you’ll see on Shopify where you’ve got this really big banner. You got this really big banner that doesn’t really do anything in telling the visitor to the site well, what’s in it? What’ve you got for me? And how do I get it?

And most of the eCommerce stores that aren’t doing that well in terms of conversions, when I analyze them, and it’s almost always the same thing. They either have a big banner like this, that pushes everything down below the fold, or they got a sliding banner, which is equally just as bad for conversions.

Now, let me show you a store that’s actually crushing it, right. This is a really good store in comparison. So here you’ve got Kodak, Kodak? Yeah, Kodiak Cakes. And they are basically, in terms of what’s happening above the fold, they’ve got it pretty much spot on. As soon as I land here, if we look at this, right, it’s better with brownies, get two free peanut butter fudge brownie cups with any purchase. So immediately I know what I’m getting when I have landed.

So, I’ve got and immediately know what they have for me. I’m going to get two free peanut butter fudge brownie cups. I mean, I pretty much want to order one of those as well.

And to redeem, add products and free cups to your shopping cart and enter discount code free brownies at checkout. So, they tell you exactly how to get it, a maximum four free cups, limited to one use per customer, shop.

I think that could probably be better. The shop button, you could probably do a bit better with the call to action, but above the fold, the minute you land on this site, you know exactly what you’re getting and you know exactly what you need to do. You’re getting two free fudge peanut butter fudge brownie cups, whatever it is, you’re getting that and it shows you exactly how to go and get it.

That is a good homepage, right? That is going to convert very well. We go back to the other one. I land on this page. What am I doing? What am I getting? How is this helping me? How do I get it? Nothing. This page here, which a lot of eCommerce themes, a lot of eCommerce sites have very similar layouts like this. This home page is going to absolutely bomb conversions.

So, just wanted to make that quick video, because it was on my mind because I literally just did this for one of my clients who joined my new eCommerce program. First things first, make sure that your store layout is set-up to maximize revenue for your business. And one of the quickest things you can do to change that and one of the quickest things you can do is when they land on the homepage, do they immediately, within three seconds, know what you have for them and how they can get it?

And that thing that you have for them, that should always be the thing that’s driving the most amount of revenue for you. So your most popular products or an offer that you’ve got, but as soon as they land there, they should be able to see exactly what it is and how they can go get it with, ideally a button above the call to action.

So, that’s it for this particular video quick, if you go ahead and make that change, if you’ve got a homepage that’s not really optimized, go ahead and make sure that it’s got this element in it, where, as soon as they land on the page, they know exactly what they’re going to get. Make that small change and it’s going to have a pretty big impact on your conversion rates.
